.....Exceeding the Challenge
Changes to parts or part lists of assemblies are controlled through the Revs form. All assemblies will start life with a revision of 1. Typically this is used during the prototyping phase of the assembly. When the product is released to full production releasing of the assembly will roll the revision to A. Similarly parts are also assigned the revision of 1 when they are just introduced. When they are fully accepted by manufacturing they can be released when they will receive a A revision.
One feature of the revision choice is what is a revision and when does a change create a new part. The classic is if the form, fit or function is different an new pat is needed. However, if the form, fit or function does not change but it is different then that part is given a new revision. Fut=rather matching drawing changes to the actual part can also be an issue.
BOMMan attacks this problem by allowing you to add values into the part number when they are made. For example If a minor change is made o the assemblies drawing and there is no form, fit or function change then a simple revision roll is suggested. If there is a change in the form, fit or function then it is suggested that the assembly is duplicated, the part number is changed to the part number of the duplicated part then modified with a alpha appended to the end to signify the assembly is different that the one it was created from. This information can then be described in the Part description notes fields or in the revision form of the initial release.
